Children's Programs

For many years, my work centered on children, families, and early learning through music. This included long-term projects such as Melodyville and Melodic Adventures, both of which were developed with care and remain close to my heart. As my professional focus has evolved, this chapter is no longer an active offering, but it continues to inform my musical and therapeutic approach. This work remains an important part of the larger arc of my musical life.

Children's Music Education

With a degree in music and a board certification in music therapy, Cheryl began teaching music to young children over 25 years ago through her own private Kindermusik business and at a Montessori preschool and kindergarten. Through the years, she expanded her skills working in children’s services at a library, creating originally designed programs and camps for local parks and recreation, and working as a teaching artist for Wolf Trap’s Institute for Early Learning through the Arts.

As a board-certified music therapist, Cheryl is able to weave her past experiences in music education with an understanding of the developmental needs of young children of all abilities.

  • Mellodyville music classes created for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and their caregivers, focusing on early music education based on social/emotional development, musical expression, vocabulary and the National Core Arts Standards.
  • Melodic Adventures, teaching social/emotional learning to children ages 5-10 though a musical framework and pulling from the ideas presented in The Zones of Regulation®.
  • Teaching Artist for Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts.
  • Children’s camps on musical story adventures, the science of music, and creative musical expression.
  • Presentations and training for preschool educators, libraries and other groups on presenting music to young children.
  • Music therapy for children is available on a case-by-case basis.
